Do Boy Scouts Carry Vaseline? - The Ultimate Multitasker
Boy Scouts are always prepared right? Well, moms are too, and most moms know that Vaseline is a beloved multitasker. I bet most people have a jar of it somewhere in their medicine cabinet. I even have a tiny trial size slipped into my diaper bag. Do you?
Well, Vaseline Petroleum Jelly is celebrating its 140th Birthday right now Happy Birthday! They are looking for 140 uses for Vaseline and teamed up with TwitterMoms to get bloggers thinking and compiling their own list of 10 uses. Okay, so I will list mine, and hope that if you think of any good ones I left out, please add them to the comments.
1. Dry Lips. This is a no brainer, right? Well, I still swear by it! When I have a cold and become a "mouth-breather" this is the only thing that keeps me from getting chapped lips. And no one likes chapped and cracked lips. Being sick is bad enough, why not be miserable but still have soft and silky lips.
2. Chapped Skin Relief - Speaking of cold and flu season, when I get a little aggressive with my poor runny nose, I develope chapped and irritated skin around my nose. The easiest way to soothe the savaged skin is with a little bit of Vaseline.
3. Rustic Rain Pants - This one made me laugh. My DH used to race mountain bikes and swears that in a pinch, Vaseline rubbed on the legs can make a light make-shift rain pant. Okay, it doesn't keep the water off you, but it does keep you warmer. Interesting, huh?
4. Moisture Barrier - Sometimes Vaseline does more than keep moisture in your skin and the air off... sometimes it works well to keep the skin underneath protected. We used Vaseline on my son after his circumcision. It helped to keep the healing area diaper dirt free.
5. Parade Smile - When I was in cheerleading we would put a bit on our teeth to help us keep smiling for long periods of time. I also used it when I showed animals. It not only kept my mouth from getting as dry, but the feeling of the Vaseline helped to remind me not to stop smiling. If my muscles relaxed, I could feel it. And boom! I was back smiling again.
6. Practical Jokes - Oh, yeah... I don't condone or want to promote this, but we all have heard a slew of practical jokes involving Vaseline. Whether it is on a door handle or under wiper blades, it is at least easy to clean up.
7. Unstick Stuck Stuff - It is as easy as that. When I have a stubborn label that won't come off of a hard surface (of course be careful of how porous the surface is) I just add a bit of Vaseline and let it sit for a few minutes. The label or tag will come right off. Easy Peasy!
8. Styling Aid - I first was told to try this at the pool with my newly dyed blond hair. If you have your hair slicked back, just add a touch. Not only does it act as an inexpensive hair gel, it also keeps your hair from soaking up all that added chlorine. It did work for me. Also, a gal in my dorm used it to help moisturize and straighten her dark hair. She would buy it in the x-tra large jar size!
9. Overnight Repair - In the winter if my hands and feet are especially dry and cracking, I will put some on before I go to bed. I rub a bit on and then put on socks or gloves to keep my skin warm and hold on the Vaseline. In the morning my skin is soft and silky.
10. Plane Precaution - When I fly, not so much anymore with my small children, I always take a small tube of Vaseline and a few Q-tips with me. When I am ready to board the plane, I will put just a dab up my nostrils to lubricate the tissue. This keeps my nose from drying out (which can cause nosebleeds) and also I was told is a good barrier for keeping airborne germs out of my system. Since I have been using this tip, my after flight colds and sniffles have become rarer.
So that is my fabulous 10 uses. Was there anything new to you? How do you use your Vaseline? Let me know in the comments section. I am constantly amazed by this versatile tool. If you are looking for more fabulous uses, either check the widget in my sidebar, or hop over to TwitterMoms for a complete list of all the bloggers participating and their posts.

Protecting Our Kids from MRSA
The One2One Network has asked members to spread the word about the Equip them Well campaign to help stop MRSA.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to some antibiotics. Though staph can normally be found on our bodies, it can enter through a cut, sore, breathing tube, etc. I was especially concerned about this while we had our hospital visits 2 years ago. Anyone with a weakened immune system... children are in this category... are more likely to get it. Take a peak at the Collect. Disinfect. Donate. video:

Upcoming CSN Review... I Can't Wait!
I live in a small town. There are many fabulous benefits to our family from living here, but shopping choices are not one of them! We have a few stores, but selection is pretty limited. When I really need to do some shopping... birthdays, holidays, or real needs... I go online. I am glad to have found resources such as CSN Stores which has 200 plus stores to make shopping easy. You can find anything from stools to complete your kitchen to games for family game night. With so many choices, how would you start your search for the perfect gift?
During the holidays I am stretched extra thin, so I need to make my shopping time count. Shopping online with CSN Stores allows me to shop anytime of day or night, and I have always enjoyed fabulous customer service with them. Items arrive quickly and my overall experiences with the company have been very good. I highly suggest trying them out for you shopping needs.
So are you curious what I will be reviewing? Hmmm.... I am looking at a few fabulous items. With the cold setting in here in the Pacific Northwest I have been eyeballing a pair of warm boots from BearPaw,
Or how about a 4 slice toaster?
Well, I'm not telling. I am going to keep that a secret until the item arrives. Stay tuned to see what I choose and my review will be posted here, too. With so many choice, this may take me a while to decide! Head over to csnstores.com to have a peek for yourself. Let me know if you have any suggestions for me.

My 5 Smart Benefit Planning Tips
Feeling a little confused about Health Care Reform right now? I have been amazed with not only the wealth of information and rumors circulating as well as how much is being done behind the scenes. health care and insurance coverage is a big topic of conversation in our household. Both of my children have a metabolic condition called PKU. It is genetic and lifelong. The kids drink a medical formula as well as eat special medical foods in order to live. Making sure they stay covered by insurance is essential to us managing their condition. Before they were born we had to decide what are health care priorities were, and choosing coverage was not easy. Since it is time again for Open Enrollment and you employer or your family might be looking into health care changes, your family's health may be top of your mind. It can be a rather scary or complicated process. Twittermoms & Aetna has asked bloggers to write 5 ways to make health benefits decisions in one hour or less from the article The Power of an Hour.
1.Attend Info Sessions Armed with Questions - Sometimes employers will bring in representatives to talk about their plans. Be sure to attend and come armed with questions if possible. I remember before my son was conceived I had a long list of questions regarding prenatal and hospital visit coverage. I found out they had special coverage we could purchase just for this. It really paid off to have asked and to be planning ahead.
2.Come with a List - Make sure you ask about which doctors are in a given network. Some plans want you so stay in a certain location, while others allow for more flexible options. I had my second child delivered in a neighboring city because I needed a doctor who would attempt a VBAC. This proceedure was not available in our town and the insurance allowed for the procedure since it could cost them less than a C-section.
3. Check in Flexible Spending - Sometimes you can use your flexible spending like a Debit Account... sometimes it works for your deductibles. The first one we had took multiple forms for reimbursement... booo.... I do love flexible spending accounts though because they can either help cover unexpected expenses, while being deducted a little at a time from your paycheck, or they can be a great way to budget for known expenses like glasses or medications.
4. Talk to your Spouse About the Coming Year - It is always a good idea to know what is coming up before you start thinking about coverage. Are you planning on having a baby? Will your child need braces? Do you have a history of cancer or other conditions at a certain age? My son is now at the age to see the dentist, so we needed to be sure to have him included on dental. Coverage priorities really change with small children.
5. Does the Coverage Cover Extras? - Do you get a break for joining a gym? Or can you get supplies for quitting smoking? Make sure to ask, and for future questions get the name of a representative or case manager you can contact. Have a name and number (or email address when available) can make your experience more enjoyable and keep you in the know.
Okay, those were pretty simple. I want to thank both TwitterMoms and Aetna for starting this conversation off. Be sure to stop by TwitterMoms for links to other great posts on this topic. I wish you all the best as you select coverage for the coming year. Luckily, Aetna has a great tool for helping to navigate these tough decisions.

Have a Milano Moment for the Cure!
As a Mother of 2 young children, my days are just crazy! I don't think a day goes by where there are no tears, tantrums or time outs.... Luckily I am blessed with those simple moments that make all the hard work worth it. Last week my 1 year old daughter was turning the tv on and off. I had sternly told her no, which of course caused her to burst out crying. My 2-year-old son went over to her and put his small arm around her shoulder. He patted her lovingly on the head with his other hand and softly said, "It's okay Audrey. Don't cry." I felt my heart swell with pride as their mother. This was a rare moment. It didn't involve hitting, throwing or having to separate the two of them. This was a lovely reminder how sweet life really is, and how lucky I am to be here as Mom to these two amazing kiddos. I just need to make sure that I am around for them for a long time to come.
When One2One network partnered up with Milano for their Pepperidge Farm Milano Moment campaign supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. Until last year, I didn't know anyone in my family with breast cancer. This year in a whirlwind 2-weeks, my Mom had a lump found, had it removed and then started treatment. I am happy to say that is was found early and all seems to be going well. But, I have to say the bottom of the earth dropped out for me when I heard the news. Now with my daughter I am especially sensitive about the disease. I want to do everything in my power to educate and prepare her for either myself or her having to hear a cancer diagnosis.
I know so many people are doing amazing things in research and I hope we will see a cure in my lifetime. But, until then we have to keep supporting and loving each other until this becomes a thing of the past. There is still time to share your Milano moment and share how sweet life can be! With each moment, Milano will donate .50 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure up to $50,000. How sweet is that? Share your moment on Facebook and do something good today: http://on.fb.me/milanomoment

Oh, and what about those yummy Milano cookies? Talk about bliss in cookie form! Be sure to look for the supportive pink packaging. Have you seen all the fabulous flavors available? I think the mint may be my ultimate favorite. Yum.
*Disclaimer -In exchange for this post I was entered to win one of fifteen $25 gift cards or one of 25 packages of Milano cookies. All opinions are my own.

Monday Weigh-In... A Little Helper
And so begins another week, and here we are at my #mamavation post and weekly weigh in. This week I am happy to say that I will be getting a little help from a new friend... a four legged companion named Coop. He is going to be my walking motivation. Well, that and I told me toddler we have to walk him daily. I know my son will hold me to it. Gotta love the stubbornness of a 2 year old!
But, I am getting ahead of myself, right? So, drumroll please.....
I am down a pound from last week. Woo-hoo! I will take anything this week. It was a crazy busy whirlwind with birthday parties (cake!) and play dates as well as tantrums and behavioral issues. Not very conducive to my exercise plan, but it did successfully keep me away from too much snacking. Okay, so I am at 189 and ready to keep losing. As for last week's goals... well, I am going to take a second stab at them. I need to get back on the treadmill and get outside with the stroller... and new dog. As for recipes... well, the tamales were a great success and spaghetti squash is always a hit.
I want to add one more small change. I want to cut out soda completely this week. I am not ready to give up my daily coffee, but maybe if I can increase my energy I can kick that too. I have never been a big soda drinker, but lately I have been reaching for the sweet horrible stuff. So addictive, right? So this weak I will force myself to crawl back to the true and pure stuff. I do have some fun herbs and citrus to add to my drinking water. All natural, no sugar... just the good stuff.
I want to send a shout out to the new Mamavation Moms, Shelley & Rachel! You guys rock and I am so eager to follow your progress. This week's Mamavation TV prize is fabulous! It is sponsored by Subway, and includes a $50 LuluLemon gift certificate, a green Gaiam gym bag & yoga mat! I could really use some feel good exercise wear. This giveaway is part of Subway’s new campaign, Commit to Fit. I am excited to see how Jared does in the NY Marathon this year. I just saw a new commercial for his training and am pretty excited that Subway support the Mamavation program.
Okay... overall not too shabby, folks! Oh, let me know if you have a real rockin' song on your MP3 right now. I need to put some new tunes on my IPod, and I have an Itunes card burning a hole in my pocket. Anything for my walks?

Review: “Tiger Suit” new CD by KT Tunstall
Earlier this month, October 5th, KT Tunstall released her her third official studio album, "Tiger Suit" . Having been a fan since I first hear "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" in 2005, as well as a fan of "Suddenly I See", I was really excited to listen to her new creations. She is a talented Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum Scottish born singer-songwriter and guitarist. I have to say that it was different from my bluesy favorite, but I still loved it.
I popped in the CD while I was home with my kids. My daughter loved it immediately. She quickly began dancing and swaying to the music. I have to admit that the first song on the album, "Uummannaq Song" got me up and moving. It would be great in my IPod for doing my cleaning or going on a walk. The fourth song, "Difficulty" I just can't get out of my head. I have caught myself singing or humming the chorus throughout the day. "Fade Like a Shadow" is already a Top 20 hit on the radio, and I understand why! I love how unique and haunting of a voice KT Tunstall has. This song has a great tempo and energy to it. Then there is the nineth track on the album, "(Still A) Weirdo"... you gotta love that the title.
The poetry in her lyrics is beautiful and she has the voice to compliment it. What more could you want in an album? I am very happy with this new addition to my music collection and would recommend it to my friends. Though it is not really my DH's thing, the kids and I outnumber him. So, there!
Lucky for you this is already available in stores... it would make a fabulous stocking stuffer for the upcoming holidays. BUY IT: You can check out KT Tunstall’s new album “Tiger Suit” wherever CDs are sold or find it on Amazon for $11.88.

Aloha Friday - #36
Aloha Everyone! In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend.Friday used to be my friend, but today it signals the end of another week... that went by too quickly! But, I survived the week, so to celebrate! Let's sit back, relax and enjoy a little blog hop. No heavy mental lifting today... just one simple little question...What Would be Your Dream Halloween Costume?
If money was no object, I would dress up my DH & myself as Josephine and Bonepart. I am alwasy on the look out for the perfect couples costume. I saw those matching costumes a few years back and they were fabulous. I just love historical figures... and those were simple and elegant. A bit pricey, but very interesting. Either that or I would like to be a saloon girl and dress my DH up as either an old time bartender, or a gun slinger. Those just sound fun. What about you? What would you dress up as?
If you are looking for more Aloha Friday fun, go to An Island Life and check out the other posts on the Linky. Have a great weekend!

Wordless Wednesday - Picture-less?
I hope everyone has a great Wednesday. I have some great pictures to share with you, but blogger hasn't been able to upload any of my pics. I have collected some pictures of my kids at the farm, in the hay maze, carving pumpkins among other things... *sigh*. Tomorrow I will find some tech support (aka my DH). I will post late if I can figure this all out....
Thanks for your patience!

Mama-vate Me! It's Mamavation Monday
I hate being "needy". I guess there are times in every Mama's life when she has to break down and ask for help. Right? Sometimes it is as simple as help with the housework, and other times it is bigger. Sometimes it involves the "D" word (diet)... but, it also might involve exercise or will power. I think all Mamas trying to loose weight need support and encouragement, but not everyone is willing to ask for it. I guess that is how I see the Sistahood. I am able to support other mamas working hard to live a healthy life, and quietly I am asking for their support, also. I am really excited to announce that last week I was accepted into the group. So not only do I have a great group of gals to support, but I will also have them to help motivate me. Yippee!
Last week I weighed myself at 209, and was rather bummed out. I promised after my first child was born that I wouldn't let myself get over 200 lbs again... I hadn't realized I was that big. But, tonight I was given a little surprise. Maybe it was the positive break I was looking for, but I figured out that my scale was off! I have two little ones and I guess someone must have fiddled with the calibration. So, this week I will be starting out at 190... and I have only down to go. I have been working on my jumping jacks, and now the treadmill has been unburied. So, I am slowly rolling.
This week my goal includes spending some quality time with the treadmill and also get outside with the double stroller. Good for me and the kids. I am also going to attempt to eat in all week and experiment with some new fresh recipes utilizing the local in season produce. I can do this! Little steps here. But, it all adds up for the end goal of a better me.
Okay, so that's my update for this week... thanks for joining me on this ride. I love comments, so let me know what you think.

Preparing for the Hunt (Are You?)
It is almost that time of year again... time to spend late nights in front of my computer with a pen, paper and my laptop. With November coming up, it is time for the Great Cloth Diaper Hunt! If you cloth diaper, this is a fun, though sometimes frustrating activity you might enjoy.
Last year was the first time I participated. You need to sign up (it is free!), then on November 1st, in the wee hours of the morning you will receive a list of all the participating web sites. It was a long list last year! This virtual scavenger hunt runs the entire month of November, with 71 fabulous prizes including a Grand Prize that totals over $500... and daily prizes for finding the icons.
You find the icons on participating sites, all diaper related. Some are easy, and some will have you tearing your hair out... or was that just me? There is a chat room this year, and like always, you can ask sponsors for hints if you are truly stumped.
So that is the low-down. I hope to see some of you hunting this year. It is good, clean, fluffy fun! Good luck.

Aloha Friday - #35

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend.Friday used to be my friend, but today it signals the end of another week... that went by too quickly! But, I survived the week, so to celebrate! Let's sit back, relax and enjoy a little blog hop. No heavy mental lifting today... just one simple little question...Pumpkins.... Farm or Store Bought?
We will be going down to the pumpkin path, our pumpkin path, with friends soon. It is a tradition that we look forward to. Finding the perfect pumpkin includes a ride in the pumpkin wagon, a run through the corn maze and lots of picture opportunities.
Yesterday while we were out shopping, I saw that our? local Walmart had pumpkin bins out front. Each orange globe was almost $3! Sheesh. Then, when we were out at Home Depot, more over priced pumpkins. What is going on? Have you ever paid prices like that? Or do you visit a local grower for a more frugal model?

Is October Stretched Too Thin?
It has come to my attention that October is:
Um, I think of October and think Halloween... and then I start to panic because it becomes birthday and holiday season in our home. But, what about all these other "celebrations"? My inbox is flooded with requests to do posts telling you guys all about what National __(fill in the blank)___ Month it is. I am saying enough, is enough. If you observe or promote any of these days, I don't mean any offense. I support Breast Cancer Awareness Month... and even took an online peek at the dogs in our local shelter, but I just can't keep up with all of October's goings-on. The more "things" that keep lumped onto months, the less they all mean. It is kinda like one bumper sticker on a car gets my attention, but 30 on the same car has me rolling my eyes.
Halloween already is struggling... I mean we already have Thanksgiving... and even some Christmas decorations up in my local stores. Last week I found Halloween place mats on close-out at 60% off. It wasn't even half-way through the month. Can't we all just give October a break? ...yeah, please forgive my rant. As a busy Mom I can barely get everything ready by Oct. 31st... let alone have to keep all the other items straight.
Okay, I promise to take a few deep breaths and clear out my inbox. I wish everyone and respective "National Day" the best, but I will be sticking with my favorite holiday. I want to give it plenty of time for a great build-up, so when the trick-or-treaters are gone I don't feel cheap. I will have had my fill of the celebration, and have given poor October, and it's fabulous holiday the attention it deserves.
Happy October everyone!
*National Bake & Decorate Month
*Breast Cancer Awareness Month
*Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
*International Dinosaur Month
*Filipino American History Month
*National Popcorn Month
...and the list goes on and on...

Behind the Scenes - Busy!
I just wanted to type up a quick note about what I have up my sleeve... there is a lot coming for you guys, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out.
Giveaways have been few and far between because I have been working behind the scenes on a new blog Mission 2 Mom. This new blog will be my outlet for everything describing my life as a Mom of 2. Adventures in all Things Food was originally intended as a cooking blog outlet, and I would love for it to get back there. It will be a really slow process where I will still host reviews and giveaways for food here, but the kids and toys will be moving to the other blog. It will be my grand experiment with Wordpress and I am a little nervous about having a '.com' instead of a blogstpot blog. I still don't know what to do with the design, so it is not quite ready to unveil.
Along with this, I am joining the Daring Baker group and will be showcasing my adventures at the end of every month... starting next month with my first challenge. I am so excited about this. 3 years ago I found the group and just knew that I wanted to try it for myself. It seemed like a great way to learn new techniques and try making things I ordinarily wouldn't have. With my babies I had no time to bake and am now feeling more confident that I can make time for it. I hope everyone will enjoy the pics and recipes.
Then, I am also applying to the Mamavation Sistahood. Those posts will be every Monday with a little update on my weight loss, exercise and general fitness journey. I have 70 lbs to lose (gasp!) but, I think I can do it with support from the Sistahood, as well as my readers here. Eventually this post will move over to the Mission 2 Mom site, but for now I am most comfortable with blogger posting.
Top this all with a Holiday Gift Guide including some fabulous reviews of the VTech Mobigo, 2 different Spin Master Toys, and some other great goodies... and then for the cherry on top? Come January, I will be part of the Blogtastic Extravaganza. What is that? It is a blog hop full of giveaways each valued at $50 or more! Isn't that cool?
Whew! Told you that I was busy. Now I need to go back to some prepping. Keep an eye out for a Foster Farms giveaway in the next day or two, and some yummy Farm Rich food reviews to get you ready for the holidays.

Sharing 10 ideas for incorporating fun and play into your child’s daily activities
Some days I feel like my days are all about changing poopey diapers, feeding my family and cleaning up afterwards. At night I crash and look forward to starting the whole routine over with a few new twists thrown in. The truth is, that is no fun. And I am sure it isn't fun for my kiddos either.
The new television network, The Hub, launched on October 10, 2010. The Hub is a NEW TV channel for kids and families where great things come TOGETHER! They hope to inspire, entertain, and engage kids, while also bringing families together. In celebration of their launch,TwitterMoms and The Hub want bloggers to think about the creative ways we incorporate fun and play into our daily activities for our kids. My two are little... so there are so many fabulous ways to do this. The more fun and creativity we put into our standard routine, the better my kids tend to behave. It is a weird correlation, but it works. So, out of all the goofy, fun and crazy things I have tried with my kiddos, here are my super top 10!
1. Get the Wiggles Out! Sometimes kids just need to get up and move. There are so many great opportunities during the day to just get up and dance. I dance to songs, tv show theme songs, commercials... and sometimes I just dance during dinner prep. My toddler just loves this! He can only hold still for short amounts of time, so this is a great cure.
2. Explore Outside. Whether you have a yard or not, you can benefit from outdoor adventures. Go outside in the stroller, go to the park, or even watch the ants in the driveway. There are so many great activities for outside exploration. We like to go searching for "treasure"... things like leaves, stones and even bugs are the perfect hidden treasure.
3. Play with Your Food. Okay, maybe not as a food fight, but you can make lunch a lot of fun by designing your child's favorite character or animals out of their lunch. Better yet, get the kids involved in their own culinary art. For simple fruit, their Mimi made a Snoopie face out of a pear half, mandarin orange section and olive. When I was little my favorite daycare activity was finger painting with pudding. I don't think tons of it got onto the paper, but it was a great sensory play activity.
4. Build Something. This is my son's favorite! Chairs, cushions and blankets are all this is necessary for your own castle, fort, tent, or anything your heart desires. Building the structure can be just as fun as playing in it. I love that this is the perfect activity for any day and clean up is fairly easy. This is so nice for those rainy fall or cold winter days.
5. Dress Up. I know I have mentioned this several times on my blog, but dress up is a fabulous way to encourage creative play. We have a box filled with assorted goodies I have been collecting for the past couple of years. Look no further than the dollar store, or the local thrift shop for inexpensive ways to build up your collection. We pull out this activity when we have a free afternoon and no idea how to fill it.
6. Make the Average Chore Fun! You don't have to go any farther than your own imagination to make the simplest chores fun. My son likes to pretend he is a bulldozer or dump truck while we clean up his room. Since I have to do this anyway I might as well get him involved. Sometimes it is timed, sometimes we are just role playing, but it does get done.
7. I Spy. An oldie, but goodie. I love that it can be played anywhere. With my son we try to keep it simple. He is only 2, but likes to find numbers, letters, colors and simple items. He is not ready to think of items himself yet, but I am sure it will be soon. This is often used when we are waiting in line, or waiting to be seated at a restaurant.
8. Tea Time! We love snacks here, and it is even more fun when we turn snack time into a mini manners lesson/play tea party. My kids love pouring the teapot and putting their pinkies up as they sip tea. We also love the chance to put on a fun hat or a feather boa. Every tea party guest loves to look and feel their best!
9. Shopping Hide & Seek - Whoo-hoo milk? I saw this idea on Super Nanny, she made a small magnetic board for each child with magnetic food pictures. The children each had a small list of items to look for. It is a great game. My kids are so interested in what is on the shopping list and the pictures they can understand. They are so excited to find all of them items.
10. Simon Says. This is a game you can use in most situations. It is great for role modeling an action like cooking or putting together a plate for dinner. Use things like, "Simon Says put the mandarin oranges in the top right of the plate." My son always wants to get this right, though I keep it simple for hims since he is so young. Usually if he follows all the directions, I give him an extra piece of his favorite food... a grape, or olive, etc. Or try it for getting dressed... "Simon says to get a pair of socks and a shirt out of the closet." The only drawback is you might end up with a unigue look for the day.
Simple isn't it? All of these ideas can be incorporated into a *ahem* usually boring day. They make the daily grind more enjoyable for the kids, and in turn it ends up being more enjoyable for me. And you know what they say about Mama being happy? I hope there is a tip in there you can use. I would love to hear your ideas. What do you do to incorporate fun and play into your day?

Book Review - Stolen by Jordan Gray
This suspense/mystery is based on the bestselling Ravenhearst Game from Big Fish Games, a mystery game set in the fictional English seaside town of Blackpool. I have never had the chance to play this particular game (where have I been?), but mysteries always intrigue me. I was very excited to devour this one. After reading the book, now I want to go and try my hand at the game.
Blackpool is linked to a famous train wreck, a lost child and a valuable cache of paintings gone missing during WW II. Hmm... 70 years later, in step a pair of outsiders looking for a simpler life, Michael & Molly Graham. In an attempt to shoot a documentary film about the Blackpool wreck, the couple becomes tangled up in the mystery... a murder, a break-in and many questions. This cozy little town is covering up some dark secrets and the Grahams can't seem to get away from them.
I enjoyed tagging along with the amateur sleuths as they tried to untangle the web in this quiet little town. Confident and likable characters helped me to jump right into the action, and a good does of action and plot twists made it a hard read to put down! I had many different hypothesis before it was all done. This was the perfect book to curl up with as the weather turns colder.
I can't wait to read the next installment of the series (this is the first of four), but it was also a fabulous stand-alone read.
*Disclaimer - Thanks to Harlequin & Twitter Moms for the chance to review this book. I was sent a copy for review purposes, no monetary compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Mamavation Monday... My First.
Hi all! This is my first of what I hope turns out to be many Mamavation Monday posts. I am pledging to the Sistahood to get myself back... back from late night snacking, back from out of control portion sizes and back from elastic in my waistband.
I have been blessed with two beautiful children who are ultimately my motivation for a healthier me. I am hoping that joining in on this rockin' Sistahood will be the push I need to stick with it. The support I crave can only be found from peers who understand where I am coming from, and who are working hard themselves. I have been up and down this roller coaster before, but I am ready to get off and back on with living my life. I want to chase my kiddos, run a marathon, and be a role model for my own daughter.
This past week I was confronted with the dreaded Halloween candy. Mmmm.... I was able to ration out the sweets, but still had other temptations. Did I mention that I love food? I don't want to ever deny myself, but need to still find the balance between enjoying it and overindulging. Do you have a candy weakness? I just adore candy corn. And am gearing up to make some this week... to give away mostly!
My other goal and challenge is exercise. With the two small kiddos I find free time at a premium. I am hoping that if I can carve out more time to get moving, I will also gain more energy. This week my goal is to dust off some of my exercise DVDs and get back onto the treadmill.
So there you have it. I pledge to stick with my weight-loss goal. I pledge to support the other sisters also along the same journey. And I pledge to be open, honest and accountable. Let's get moving!!! Be sure to check out the other ladies at Mamavation.com.
Also be sure to check out the Commit to Fit Campaign and Jared . You know, Jared from Subway fame? He is a huge motivator for any real person trying to loose weight in the real world.
Have a great week everyone! I look forward to meeting everyone and joining this great Sistahood!

Protecting your Family from the Flu this Season
Ugh... I am writing this as my head pounds and my sinuses are plugged. I hate being sick. Even though this is only a measly little cold it has knocked me down on my behind. Add to that a house with 2 sick kiddos and a sick DH (...make that 3 sick kiddos...) and illness is tough to beat.
Riddle me this, how do you rest if you need to take care of your family? And how do you take care of your family's needs when you need to rest?
Okay, this cold will be just a memory in a day or two, but the flu season is almost upon us. If a cold was this devastating to my sleep, housework, free time... I don't want to think of what my house with the flu will be like. TwitterMoms and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDRC) want to spread the word about how to prevent your family from being miserable with the flu this year. Remember, the flu can cause severe illness in the young and elderly as well as possible death. Serious stuff!
Luckily there are several simple things to help prevent getting or transmitting the flu. First off my family all gets vaccinated. I know not everyone agrees with vaccinations, but we believe it helps us. My son is very sensitive to illness, so we make sure he is vaccinated and also get our vaccinations to protect him. These shots last us the entire season and are quick and easy to get. We had both the season flu and H1N1 vaccinations to cover all the bases.
If you have an aversion to needles, try the nasal mist. We all got the HIN1 via mist last year and it didn't have any of the usual soreness a needle shot brings. For more information on this, ask your doctor or visit www.cdc.gov/flu.
Of course don't forget the simple things like hand washing throughout the day and coughing into the inside of your elbow to cut down on transmission. If you are getting sick, stay home and rest instead of braving through. Going to work sick can not only cause your recovery to take longer, but you can also be exposing all of your coworkers.
Do you have any good tips? I know my Grandmother would have sworn by copious amounts of garlic and a healthy diet full of vitamin C. What about you? Be in the "know" by staying connected with the CDRC at any of these locations:

If everyone followed these simple suggestions, was vaccinated and took care not to spread the bug once infected we could lower the instances of serious flu complications. I know that I will be doing whatever I can to help my family avoid more sick days. Ugh... I can only bare a few of these a year. Either check with your family doctor or look for local flu clinics in your area to find out when the flu vaccination is offered. Take care.

Celebrate the Small Things...
Today I am thankful for cereal. Oh, don't give me that look. I have long ago stopped thinking of food as I used to. When you have two children with a rare metabolic condition, it changes your view of the world. Well, at least it changed my view of cereal. My little non-eater has taken to a small amount (1/4 cup) of Cheerios in a little (2 oz.) of rice milk.
Nom, nom, nom. If he starts to eat more I will have to switch him to Rice Krispies! ...or special ordered low protein alternatives.
Such a simple thing I took for granted. Now my boy is eating his breakfast all by himself, like a normal kid. I will take normalcy where I can find it. I am celebrating this small gift in my day.

Giveaway - Tropical Traditions Coconut Cream Concentrate
I am excited to share another review and giveaway from the generous folks at Tropical Traditions. They have a wide range of products from food (yum!), to cleaning products. So far I have loved their products, and this time around it was no exception. I was sent a jar of their Coconut Cream Concentrate to review.
Of course, I was drooling over their recipe section... as always! I was amazed how many recipes on their site listed the concentrate. It is used in candy, fudge, and ice cream .... as well as for coconut fish, red lentil soup and other things. I went straight for the vanilla coconut cream candy.
Because I am just that bad, I sprinkled the tops with coconut flakes... I couldn't help myself! I also added more walnuts to the mix. Probably more calories than I needed, but I loved the added texture. The recipe was simple and I put the soft mixture into candy cups to cool & harden. This saved me from having to slice them later. They were a big hit.
I also love that the Coconut Cream Concentrate can be diluted down and used as coconut milk in recipes. I plan on using this in my coconut rice later this month.
I have enjoyed working with this company in the past. Do you remember the Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil I reviewed? Or the Coconut Peanut Butter? I was impressed with both products and still recommend them to friends and readers alike. If you want to learn more about their coconut products you can watch, “How We Discovered Virgin Coconut Oil - An Interview with Brian Shilhavy, CEO Tropical Traditions” http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=4h6eycjf29M
Would you like to try this Coconut Cream Concentrate out for yourself? Of course. Be sure to check them out on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/ Tropical-Traditions/ 21958449446
Here is your chance to win your very own jar of this versatile and yummy product.
*Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product.

#TableManners Twitter Party
Do you enjoy family dinners? Do you really enjoy your family dinners? I have to say that in my house there is more food being smeared than eaten. With two children, a 1-year-old and an almost 3-year-old, dinner is less than proper.
We are working hard at using our utensils correctly, passing things (not throwing) during dinner, and using "please" and "thank you". But, I am always looking for more help to get my little guy on the path to Mr. Manners.
I have had more than a few dinner time mishaps with my children... usually having to do with the kids grabbing for things at the table. I have ended up in a few occasions with wet pants in a restaurant because my son knocked over a water. Of course the ultimate humiliation usually comes from melt downs... but flying food is no joke either. Oh, and a word of warning... don't sit in the booth behind my son.
@BarberFoods is holding a twitter party on October 14th, 7:30 - 9 pm EST. I will be there... and already RSVP'd. With the holidays just around the corner, I am hoping that the Etiquette Queen and other manner experts can help me keep the mashed potatoes off the ceiling. Join in, have some fun and possibly win some cool prizes! For more info about those prizes and how to RSVP, just click on the cool button below. See ya there!

I tend to spoil the kiddos when they are sick. I take video requests and we all snuggle in for a relaxing day. I think the kids are already feeling better. Too bad Mom & Dad aren't - thanks to those sleepless nights up with the sick kids.
So, I have a list of stuff to post. I can't wait! Some giveaways, recipes and general family fun. Stay tuned.

It's Alive! - Fermentation in my Kitchen
I have always loved Sauerkraut... but, have never attempted it. It has been on my short list for the past year, but honestly was a bit intimidated by it. Finally I took the plunge...
I found food grade buckets and we searched high and low for a cheap plate (thank you Walmart)... the problem was, did you know buckets taper inside? That helps them to stack. So the plate I carefully found only fit down about half way. Grrr...
I was left with a bunch of shredded cabbage and no home, so my DH gifted me with a beautiful pickling crock.
Isn't that pretty? Okay, so the salted cabbage was relocated here and a new plate was found that actually fit this time. A water jug goes on top to add pressure. I think I will replace it with a good clean rock or two soon. Most books and online resources talked about their sauerkraut rock. Lol. I am on the look out!
Almost like magic, after the first day, enough water was released from the cabbage to cover it. I didn't need to add any more brine. I have been scalding my cloth every day to keep it free from air born gunk. So far, so good. Now I am just waiting and keeping an eye on it. After another week I should be ready to can it and test it out. Wish me luck!
I found all sorts of other fabulous projects listed in Wild Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz. I would love to try the kimchi... and the tempeh was really enticing. If you have a "fermentation fetish" be sure to check out his book.
