Babies!! Gotta love 'em! They arrive in this world helpless, smelling so good, and feeling amazingly soft.
But of course there is a darker side to caring for a baby. With that irresistibly soft skin comes....
...the dreaded Diaper Rash!!!
Just the name can strike fear into the hearts of parents everywhere. (Mine included!) From chapped bottoms to screams and tears, I found it could go from bad to worse if I wasn't prepared.
My son was the worst. He has very sensitive skin and from the start we learned that if I didn't catch diaper rash quickly, he would develop horrible sores in the diaper area. Through trial and error, here are my tips to help combat red and angry diaper rash:
- Change diapers frequently. I kept my son as dry as I could with frequent diaper changes. Have you heard the joke about the newborn diapers? 7-10 lbs? No, that is not how much you can fill the diapers with.
- Dab dry. After changing diapers and using baby wipes I started dabbing my kids dry with cloth wipes. This ensured there was no more moisture left to irritate the skin and made diaper rash more infrequent.
- Be prepared & prevent. Keep a handy tube of Boudreaux's Butt Paste in multiple places. I kept a tube in my purse, in my diaper bag, at the changing station and with my emergency diaper changing stash in the car. Have it handy and use it right away if you notice irritation.
- Seal to heal. If you need to use diaper rash cream, use it to cover the entire affected area. I like to smear it on thick for a nice comfortable barrier from friction and moisture.
In full disclosure, we don't use Boudreaux's Butt Paste for only diaper changes. It has been very handy anytime we have chaffing, rubbing or moisture. Yes, even mamas need rash relief after a 5K. Whether you are running, cycling or sporting that diaper, it can be a real help to kick some rash!
I was sent a fabulous rash kicking kit to get me started. I love all the goodies that were included. From a diaper and wipes to a pacifier and rattle to keep baby busy while changing. Of course, there was also the essential tube of Boudreaux's Butt Paste.
I love how thick the paste is. Water repellent and even soothing on angry skin, this is my favorite brand to buy. And the scent? Not overpowering or medicinal, it is light and subtle. Not everyone has to know your baby has diaper rash.
After two children in diapers I can say that diaper rash comes and goes with stages. For my daughter the rash didn't start until after she began eating more solid foods. Depending on what she ate, some days I couldn't change her diaper fast enough to keep her skin from becoming irritated. We found citrus especially irritating. Along with all those diaper changes I used a healthy amount of diaper rash cream to keep her from having rash-induced melt-downs. She was definitely angry when her bottom was sore, but it didn't have to ruin our day.
My daughter is still in diapers and recently has been going through a new stage of being shy about it. Instead of proudly letting me know when she needs her pants changed, she will run off and play or hide so I find she sitting in wet pants more often. Thank goodness for Boudreaux's!
Here is a great video of the scourge "Rashadon" from Boudreaux's Butt Paste
Have a great diaper rash tale? Be sure to share it over on the Boudreaux's Butt Paste Facebook Page and read the stories and comments from other parents facing their own "Rashadon". While you are on the Facebook page be sure to share this cute video with your friends, everyone needs a little humor in their day, right?

Use corn starch rather than baby powder. It absorbers moisture and protects better
ReplyDeleteI always use the rash cream whether there's a rash or not.

Deletei love this product, my son had bad rashes I tried all kinds of stuff then my cousin told about this and I've used ever since, I tell everyone about it. thanks
ReplyDeleteMy oldest daughter is like my husband in a lot of ways. One major way is that she is allergic to orange foods. Yes, orange foods. So, her entire life, she has been unable to eat anything with sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, mangoes, or papaya in it. If she did consume anything with those foods, she would get a terrible, awful diaper rash. It would cover her entire bum! And just as long as this allergy has been in our lives, so has Butt Paste. It always cleared up her rashes, and now we use it on my youngest as well. Nothing beats it!

ReplyDeleteMy daughter got a rash from a specific brand of diapers. Once I figured it out, we avoided those diapers. Other than that, I don't have a trick other than change those soiled diapers ASAP :-) aitmama {{at}} gmail {{tod}} com
ReplyDeleteTo prevent diaper rash, we use barrier creams. If diaper rash is already present, we try to air dry.

To help heal or prevent diaper rash, make sure you get in your daily naked time! This is dangerous, so be prepared with towels. It really does help air that normally moist area out and keep baby happy. But then also use a good cream, like Boudreaux's. It really did seem like it worked the best for us.

ReplyDeleteI don't have any diaper rash trick/tip nor story (no kiddos for me yet), but all my mommy friends rave about Butt Paste. And, I've heard of it being used for various skin conditions... Butt Paste is not just for Butts and not just for Babies :)

A good thing to with diaper rash if you can is to immediately change their poopy diapers and I don't wipe the area if their is already diaper rash. I just let their little bottoms swish in plain water.

To keep rash at bay we clean thoroughly with water and wipe dry with bummas and we always put Butt Paste on. We’ve had no trouble with rash and our little one’s bottom is very happy!

ReplyDeleteMy son had the worst diaper rash. The only thing that got rid of it was Butt Paste!
ReplyDeleteWell, Boudreaux’s is the BEST brand of cream you can buy for it. Other than that, we just let their little booties “air out” for a bit with no diaper, and then I use some talc-free baby powder sometimes… but really, one good slathering of BBP overnight usually took care of any trouble my babies ever had with diaper rash. LOVE this stuff.

ReplyDeleteTo prevent diaper rash, change diapers often, immediately after a poop to prevent it from sitting on the skin for too long. Dry the area off without rubbing and apply a diaper rash cream.

We cloth diaper, so when rashes happen, we go to fitteds/prefolds without covers (or with wool covers), lots of naked booty time or baths offered, and we use CJ's BUTTer! :-)

My best tip is I use baking soda in a sink bath to help soothe the rash.. also I sprinkle corn starch on the bottom when I change her. If it keeps happening.. check for food allergies.. they tend to irritate the babies bottom

Always use powder on top of the diaper rash cream as it gets rid of the moisture on the skin which causes the stinging sensation.

We change him often and let him soak in the tub if it's looking irritated.

I worked in an NICU and sometimes diaper rash would get so bad we would use a tube to blow oxygen on it. Helped a ton!!
ReplyDeletePosted it on twitter. https://twitter.com/mrsmommyblogger/status/256746828329017345
ReplyDeleteMy tip is to not skimp on the diapers themselves. Some brands wick away the moisture better than others and that makes a big difference, especially for nighttime when it's sitting longer.

ReplyDeleteWe use the green tube of the Boudreaux's Butt Paste every since day since my daughter was born. We prefer the green tube because I think it spreads better but either way the product is amazing! My daughter has NEVER had a diaper rash and she turned two last week. We use Boudreaux's as preventative care for her tiny little hiney and it works!

Leaving the diaper off if possible so the area stays dry. Soft wash cloths to cleanse the area without irritating soap. Using lots of diaper cream helps, also.
