Netflix Inspires this Season - Up in Flames Drunken Bananas with Spiced Ice Cream

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Netflix for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

With my small kids and the holidays fast approaching, I might have missed out on an episode or two of my favorite shows. Sadly, I know I have even missed out on a few good series or two with the new baby.
One of the shows I keep hearing about is "Arrested Development".

Have you seen it?

One thing I seem to get more out of than even my DVR is our Netflix subscription. We have had one since college and it is how I catch up on all the best TV shows and movies. Now I can even watch Netflix on my iPad in the kitchen. For a busy baker like myself, that sure does help pass the time when I am waiting on a batch of cookies or a loaf of cranberry orange bread.

And the whole family has a great selection of shows to choose from with Netflix's top Turkey day suggestions for movies and shows the whole family can enjoy while they wait.

Netflix partnered with chef Curtis Stone, don't you love him?... to create some custom holiday recipes that are the perfect pairing with popular shows or movies available on Netflix. Since I really need to catch up on shows like "Arrested Development", I chose to make the Up In Flames Drunken Bananas with Spiced Ice Cream. Doesn't it look amazing? It tasted even better than it looked.

The list of ingredients is pretty simple.

The Flambeed Bananas require:
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1/4 c. dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 medium bananas, peeled
  • 1/4 c. golden rum
  • 2 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream
But the key ingredient is the rum. Our came with a flammability warning. According to the store owner, this was the good stuff.

Don't worry. I'm of legal drinking age and I was very careful in the kitchen.

First the caramel sauce was created. Melt the butter in a nonstick skillet and then add the brown sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Let it start to bubble and then add the bananas.

Cut the bananas in half length-wise and place them cut-side down in the skillet. Caramelize them for about 3 minutes.

Then it was time to light the dish. Burner off, lid at the ready in case things got out of hand. Add the rum and then light with a long match. Be careful! When the flame goes out on its own, return it to the stove top and flip the bananas.

Let it cook for another minute or two, basting the bananas with the caramel sauce. Then you have warm, caramelly, rum goodness!  Topped with the spiced ice cream it was the perfect dessert for two.
