The Silent Sounds of Chaos

TSSOCEbookAmazon (1) A silent call for help began the friendship between two children. A bond unlike any other kept them together. Finn was just a kid when he first heard Snow’s voice inside his head, two children in need of a friend and finding one in mysterious strangers. Never meeting in person, the pair grows up as opposites – Finn the boy who loves to get in trouble and works for the toughest drug lord in town, Snow the good, sheltered girl who wants to be a doctor.

The bond built upon a strange ability to hear each other’s thoughts is threatened when Snow is abducted, her screams for help consuming Finn’s mind until they disappear completely, submerging him in a terrifying silence he’s never known before. Now it’s up to Finn to save her, led only by Snow’s sporadic thoughts as she floats in and out of consciousness.

But the search for Snow leads him to a truth he isn’t prepared to face, a truth that has the power to unravel his entire world. The people he thought he knew, the life he thought he’d made, the best friend he thought he could protect – all point toward a brutal reality should he fail. And as Finn struggles to find Snow before she slips away, he must fight to keep that reality out, lest he let the chaos in.

This is not the first book I have featured by Kristina Circelli. A few years back I had the chance to review The Never.  Her newest book is definitely one I plan to add to my summer reading list!  Be sure to check out the excerpt below for a taste of what this book has in store, and check out the giveaway at the bottom of this post.

The Silent Sounds of Chaos – Excerpt 1
The boy huddled in the farthest corner of his tiny closet, bony shoulders pressed up against the
cheap, paneled walls of an already falling-apart trailer. In his hands he twisted the thin metal of
a paperclip, creating loops and shapes until they formed a stick man, just one of many he’d created to
distract himself from the sounds filling his run-down home.

Through the thin walls of his bedroom he could hear the source of his fear ‒‒ two voices
engaged in a verbal sparring match in the next room. One of them he knew, a shockingly thin woman with unwashed blonde hair and sunken blue eyes that, in the past, may have matched his own. The other he knew from many nights such as these, a tall and wide man with frightening pictures on his arms. Their shouts filled him with fear, the woman accusing the man of doing terrible things, the man ordering her to pay or else he’d do those terrible things again.

Their hate, their anger, sent him into the closet, where he often hid when his mother’s visitors
gave him those strange and calculating looks. His arms wrapped around a soft, yellow blanket almost
as big as he was, one he’d kept at his side for as long as his young mind could remember. Face buried in the yellow comfort, he tried hard not to be afraid.

Tonight his fear felt different. He felt different, so tired and scared and hurting from a night he’d
lived too many times in his young life. But, more than tired – he felt a part of himself fade away
into nothingness, only to be replaced by the same hate filling the voices outside his room.

One tiny hand pressed over an ear, the other holding the blanket to his chest, as his body
began to rock ever so slightly. He concentrated on the roaring in his ears rather than the thud of a body hitting the hollow floor, or the whimpers from a broken woman who’d given up long ago.

Make it stop.

In his head he whispered the silent plea to anyone who could help him, anyone who could hear
the unspoken words of a little boy trapped in his bedroom closet. No one had ever heard him
before, but maybe, just maybe, tonight would be different.

Please make it stop.

And then, by magic or miracle, his plea was answered.

I will protect you.

The voice whispered inside his mind, fluttering through his senses in a way that almost tickled.

The boy stilled, listening carefully for the voice again, a quiet, high-pitched tone he felt like he should know, but couldn’t quite place.

When he heard only the rushing in his ears, he reached out. Hello?

I will protect you, the voice said again, a girl’s voice.

He knew he should probably be afraid of a stranger magically talking to him, but he liked the
sound of this particular stranger. It sounded like music when she spoke, and distracted him from the
screeching and thudding going on outside the safety of his mind.

Who are you? he asked, and could almost feel the hesitation on the other end.

I’m not supposed to tell strangers my name … Are you real?

He huffed. Of course I’m real.

How can I hear you?

He thought about it, not coming up with an answer. Nor did he want to admit to silently praying
for help, help that came in the form of her innocent proclamation. Dunno.

I heard you, she insisted. I heard you crying in my head.

I wasn’t crying.

Well, if you say so … Are you sure you’re real?

Are you? he countered, trying to comprehend the fluttering in his mind amidst the shouting
through the walls.

I think so.

How old are you?

Seven.

Me too. He felt a strange twinge of satisfaction that she wasn’t older, and that they had
something in common. Who are you? Again, he sensed hesitation. I’m not a stranger.

Are too.

Fine. He huffed again and squeezed his eyes shut. It was almost fun, blocking out the entire
world and focusing only on the person living in his brain. Then let’s pretend to be other people. I
wanna be … an explorer, and have lots of adventures and cause lots of trouble, and run away whenever I feel like it.

He heard her giggle in his mind, and instantly loved the sound. Who are you?

I wanna be … a princess! The prettiest princess in the world who makes friends with everyone
and talks to all the animals.

What a girl.

Hey!

He grimaced at himself, forgetting that this strange new girl could hear all his thoughts. Sorry …
I don’t know what to call you. You need a name.

You think of one, she giggled at him.

He thought, long and hard. Okay. How about … I know! Can I call you Snow? Like the princess
all the girls at school talk about?

Can I call you Finn? Like the little boy I saw in a movie at school who ran away to live on the
river?

They agreed upon their new names, and, with their introductions, the two children were no
longer strangers.

He talked to her through the night, the menacing sounds around him disappearing as he
listened to her talk in her youthful, high-pitched voice. She told him about her life living by the beach, with a mother and father who were very nice to her. She liked to read, and watch movies with princesses, and wanted to learn how to swim. It was a happy life, he could tell, and yet, he sensed loneliness in her tone, though he couldn’t identify its source.

She listened to him until morning, wondering why he sounded so scared when his words first
filtered through her mind, enjoying the way his tone relaxed as the night wore on. He told her about his life in a run-down trailer park, with a mother who paid more attention to strange men and things with weird smells. He liked to skateboard, and hang out with his friends, and hoped to be on a football team someday. It was a hard life, she imagined sadly, and yet, she knew he faced each day with the kind of mischievousness only boys could cause.

When she grew quiet, no longer responding, he worried she had grown tired of his stories.

“Don’t leave me,” he whispered out loud, not wanting her to hear his childish plea. Deep down
he hoped she was only tired, that he’d kept her up too late. Her, the voice in his head, a stranger
who probably didn’t really exist. But he didn’t want to give her up, because giving her up would mean
accepting the reality around him. And so, instead of saying good-bye or goodnight, the boy now
named Finn decided to make her his.

Just before they both drifted off to sleep, one in a closet, and one in a bed an unknown number
of miles away, he needed to hear her voice one last time.

Will you be my friend, Snow?

Forever, Finn.

 My Review:

With great characters to build on, this story grabbed me. Who hasn't had a dream? Maris had a great life, a job teaching vocal lessons, a great boyfriend, but also a lingering dream. I think we all have that "path not taken" sometime in our life, but sometimes fate throws things at us to shake up our normal. Maris has to deal with what she sees as "normal" and figure out what she really wants in life.

I enjoyed the introduction of Beatrice, she was a great way for Maris to learn more about herself, as well as her grandmother.  Loved the Sound of Music references in the book, Melissa Baldwin has a lot of fun with her stories and references.

Overall, a fun and memorable read. Definitely perfect for a cool fall evening or weekend guilty pleasure read!

Reviewed by www.mikishope.com This is a perfect 1st cookbook for children to start learning the art of baking. There is only one recipe but it comes with a storyline. Mimi wants to bake cookies and Grandma is going to teach her the correct way!! What fun--you have to be real careful with the measurements and ingredients and you also have to know when to let a grown up take over! This little book has it all covered. Actually I might even be able to bake cookies after having read this!! This is only one in a series of books with recipes-one to a book that this chef author has written. I suggest you read about the author below-it is intriguing. Then go and pre order this book for your little chef/baker! Reviewed by Kirstin Pulioff at www.kirstinpulioff.com My Review - 5 Stars Since my daughter wants to be a chef when she grows up, I have read several cooking books and cookbooks with her, but nothing comparable to Mimi's Adventure in Baking Chocolate Cookies. What a fabulous book! Not only does this book describe the technique and recipe for baking cookies, but it also focuses on a story. There are many ways to read this story. You can simple read it as a wonderful book. You can focus on the bright illustrations. The ingredients and steps make for the perfect math focus... and it also reads as an activity book that you can read while you bake. In every way, this book earns my 5 star review... And now, I'm going to bake some cookies.

My Review

I really enjoyed sharing Mimi's Adventures in Baking with my 5-year old daughter. She is learning to read and really excited to help me out in the kitchen. Besides having cute and colorful illustrations, the book walked her through the basics of making chocolate chip cookies without being dry like a printed recipe.

We started by reading the story together.

Then we made a date to bake and re-read the story as we went through the recipe. The story included great explanations for simple skills like measuring flour and breaking eggs.

In the end, we had a great afternoon, practiced reading a cute story, AND ended up with a batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies that my daughter had the confidence to make with my supervision.

I applaud Alyssa Gangeri for her creative book and highly recommend this story to give children an opportunity to learn and experience baking for themselves. I truly hope she creates more stories like this to encourage children to tackle even more kitchen skills and recipes.

 My Review:

An Event to Remember...or Forget was a fun and entertaining read. I have to say, if you are looking for a light and humorous book to stuff in your beach bag this Summer, this romantic comedy is the perfect choice!

As a busy Mom I want a book with good characters, witty writing and a memorable enough plot line to take me away from a chaotic house during nap time, and not let me forget why I want to pick it back up when the next spare moment presents itself. This book kept me wanting more, with just enough twists in the plot line that I found it enjoyable, but not so much so that I had reader whiplash.

Told in 1st person, the writing is casual, familiar, almost like I was talking to myself. And at several points in the book I could relate to Sienna. Yes, I liked Sienna.

Paired with a glass of iced tea and a comfortable chair, you might be tempted to down this whole book (all 219 pages) in just one sitting. Go ahead, I won't judge you. In fact, I bet you'll love it!

My Review:
Another fabulous installment of this series. This is the third book I have read by author Paul E. Horsman, the second in this particular series, and with each story I have a renewed appreciation for the author's storytelling. You can read my previous review for Rhidauna (Book 1)

There is something about a familiar character, they become like old friends. I was excited to pick back up with Ghyll. He has matured and changed through the stories, but has remained likable and worthy to hold the reader's interest.

This is a fast read filled with action, great characters and promise for even more great books to come.

My Review:
Fabulous writing and great great characters kept this YA book's mystery plot sailing along. Chira was a strong and likable character who's meeting of the new boy, Ben, seems to change everything for her. You will fall in love with this unusual, but kind character. Any guy with an owl on his shoulder is okay in my book!

Author Pauline Creeden did a fabulous job of leaving bread crumbs throughout the book... but don't get too comfortable with your theories, some turns will surprise you.

This book exceeded my expectations for a YA paranormal mystery. What can I say? I just love haunted houses. I think this is going to be a great new series to have on this Summer's reading list.

Author Bio:

In simple language, Pauline Creeden creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long. Pauline is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy. Her books have hit #1 on the Amazon Bestseller List and Armored Hearts won the 2013 Book Junkie’s Choice Award in Historical Fiction. First Impression: A Shadow Maven Paranormal is her first mystery. It’s a dark urban fantasy and will be released March 24, 2014.

My Review:
A lovely treat in this historical romance, I felt transported back in time. From the clothing to social events and marriage, the life of a lady of this time is so different. Author Katy Walters told a fabulous store with vivid imagery from the period. Lady Isabella's character though, manages to still stand up for herself and push forward her marriage ... despite a reluctanct groom. There is excitement and surprises, and you will want to grab the next book immediately after you finish the last page.

My Review:
Leviathan, a book that takes on a wide range of myths and beliefs in a monster of a storyline, is Charbel Tadros'  first book in the War of the Heavens series.

Descriptive writing and and a suspensful storyline kept me glued to this tale of fantasy. While playing with a typical good versus evil scenerio, the story and characters are anything but average. Some sections were a little bogged down with all the theology and mythology involved, but I appreciated the perspective the athor presented.

Not your average fantasy story and this is just the begining of the series. Hold onto your Kindles, there is much more to look forward to from author Charbel Tardros.

We love to eat but that doesn't mean our stomachs always enjoy digesting what we put in them. Add to this the fact that our nation is heavier than it's ever been, and it's clear that our tummies don't just need to function better, they need to be smaller. In general, smaller stomachs digest food more effectively, and that's why dropping the pounds isn't just a matter of vanity but of health. Featuring carb-light, anti-inflammatory foods, the 21-Day Tummy eating plan slashes inches from your belly (up to 4 ½ inches!) while banishing gas and bloating, heartburn and acid relux, constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Evelyn Project, by Kfir Luzzatto - My Review

"A Great Book! - Larry King"

Evelyn’s father did everything that was in his power to save his dying daughter, black magic included. But when a century later his plea for help gets into the wrong hands, all hell breaks loose.

Caught in the slippery battlefield between the Vatican and a cult that wants to change the past, a young Italian professor and a beautiful French aspiring actress are too busy running away from murder and conspiracy to let physical attraction develop into love.

And it doesn’t help that Her Majesty's Secret Service decides to take an interest in what everybody else is doing and to pull some strings of its own. Quite the contrary, in fact…

My Review:

A slow building mystery, wrapped within a science-fiction story, just dripping with suspense... I was hooked from the opening scene. I loved how the author revealed only enough of the deeper story line to keep me reading. Mysterious strangers, lucrative experiments, bloodlines and seances  - this story combined so many great ideas along with the ultimate science-fiction paradox, changing the past and the repercussions for the future.

The author also masterly created a diverse and rich cast of characters with backstories and motivation to keep the plot racing forward. I loved how this story predominantly bounced between two times - 2009 and 1894. By the end of the story you see how every character, no matter how small, played a part.

Truly a science-fiction must-read! I loved this one!

Meet the Author:

Kfir was born and raised in Italy, and moved to Israel as a teenager. He acquired the love for the English language from his father, a former U.S. soldier and WWII veteran, a voracious reader and a prolific writer. With a PhD in chemical engineering and a long family history that he needs to live up to, Kfir work as a patent attorney and heads the patent law firm that was established by his great-grandfather in Milan, Italy, in 1869. Kfir lives in Omer, Israel, with his full-time partner, Esther, their four children, Michal, Lilach, Tamar and Yonatan, and the dog Elvis. Writing has always been Kfir's passion and for almost four years he wrote a weekly "Patents" column in Globes (Israel’s financial newspaper), which also yielded his only (if he can help it) non-fiction book, THE WORLD OF PATENTS, (a not-so-boring tale of what patents are about, in Hebrew), which was published in 2002 by Globes Press. Kfir loves writing short stories but has too many novels waiting to be written (and possibly not enough years ahead of him to write them all), so now he mostly writes full-length fiction. His other passion is working with other authors on stories he loves and that's how he wound up serving on the editorial board of The Harrow Press as Anthology Editor. You can read about Kfir's books here. He loves them all, but never had greater fun than when working on “HAVE BOOK WILL TRAVEL”, a YA fantasy that he wrote together with his son, Yonatan. Scattered Links by M. Weidenbenner - My Review

I was provided a review copy from Promotional Book Tours to facilitate a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

 Scattered Links

Scattered Links is a novel that pulls its characters from the gutters and, in the end, celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit.

Thirteen-year-old Oksana lives on the streets of Russia with her pregnant mama and abusive aunt—both prostitutes. When Mama swells into labor, Oksana makes a decision to save herself from abandonment, a decision that torments her forever. When her plan fails and her aunt dumps her in an orphanage, she never has the chance to say goodbye to her mama or tell her the secret that haunts her.

Scattered Links is a story of family and the consequences that come from never learning how to love, of a girl’s inability to bond with her adopted family and the frustrations that follow. How can a child understand the mechanics of forming a healthy relationship when she never had a mother who answered her cries, held her when she was frightened, fed her when she was hungry, or loved her unconditionally?

Only when the child meets a rescued abused horse, and recognizes the pain in his eyes, does she begin to trust again.
