Grab Your FREE "Fire Up the Grill" Cookbook from Kraft

Sponsored post by Lunchbox. All opinions and experience are my own.

Our summer is starting to wind down, but I have big plans to enjoy this last month, before school starts, to get out and grill more! There is nothing like sitting outside and enjoying great food with my family. For an added bonus, grilling means our kitchen doesn't heat up the house.

For more meal inspiration, you can download the FREE Kraft, "Fire Up the Grill" Cookbook. Filled with lots of family-friendly ideas, this cookbook is filled with grilling greats as well as other treats to serve up alongside.

One of my favorite recipes is the Sopapilla Cheesecake recipe found in the "Fire Up the Grill" Cookbook.

What do you think? These bars were a huge hit with my family. You will be surprised just how fast they will disappear.

Don't miss out. Download your FREE "Fire Up the Grill" Cookbook from Kraft, today!

I would love to hear how you plan to spend the rest of your summer!

Do you have any grilling time in store? Any last-mnute backyard gatherings or family celebrations planned?

A Glorious Brunch and review of Twenty Dinners

"I received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books for review purposes. All opinions and experiences are my own. This post contains affiliate links"

Sometimes the best food is just simple and fresh.

Take this lovely little brunch idea from Twenty Dinners. It combined a favorite of mine, toad in a hole... or maybe you call it bird in a nest? Along with a fresh Ceasar salad. This may actually be a new favorite pairing of mine. Along with a cup of strong coffee, it was a great way to enjoy my Memorial Day morning.

I was recently sent this cookbook, Twenty Dinners by Ithai Schori and Chris Taylor. Beautifully photographed this collection of arranged meals perfect for entertaining arranged by season and availability.

About Twenty Dinners:
A photographer (who happens to be an ex-restaurant cook) and an indie rock star (who happens to be an avid home cook) show you how to slow down your life by cooking beautiful, straightforward, but sophisticated, food for–and with–friends.
When he’s on tour with his band, Grizzly Bear, what Chris Taylor misses most about home is the kitchen and the company. With his friend Ithai Schori, he cooks dinner parties for four to forty, using skills Chris learned from his mom and Ithai picked up working at high-end restaurants. Their food is full of smart techniques that make everything taste just a little better than you thought possible–like toasting nuts in browned butter or charring apples for a complex applesauce–but their style is laid-back and unhurried. This is about cooking not just for, but with, your friends, and so the authors enlisted their favorite pastry chef, mixologist, sommelier, and baristas to write detailed material on wine, desserts, stocking a home bar, mixing drinks, and buying and brewing fantastic coffee. Through more than 100 seasonally arranged recipes and gorgeous, evocative photographs of their gatherings you fall into their world, where you and your friends have all day to put food on the table, and where there’s always time for another cocktail in a mason jar before dinner.

I did enjoy the photos and also the wide range of ingredients used. Some might be harder to find unless you have a good farmer's market available, but most could easily be modified or enjoyed with items from your own garden, etc.

I found several items I want to make from this cookbook, but due to the early Spring I went with something available to me now. My hens have started laying more with the longer days so "Toad in a Hole" was a great choice.

The most pleasant surprise was finding how well homemade Ceasar salad went with this dish. ...and how easy it is to whip up a large batch of Ceasar dressing to enjoy for a whole week of meals.

If you love food, or love to entertain, I highly recommend checking out Twenty Dinners.

Do you cook seasonally? Do you entertain often? Have you ever thought of hosting with a seasonal and unique dish?

Greek Meatball Soup (Youvarlakia Avgolemono) - From It's All Greek To Me, by Debbie Matenopoulos

I was sent a complimentary copy of this book in order to facilitate my review. All opinions and results are my own. #OneYrGreek

One of my all-time favorite favorite restaurants in town is a little Greek restaurant called Alexanders. You have to understand that I have never been to Greece and my dining choices in this small town are pretty limited. When this place opened up, I was in heaven!

Of course the flavors and fresh food is something I would love to bring home to share with my family, or use to entertain with when my friends come over. So I was very excited to join in on the first anniversary book tour for Its All Greek To Me - Transform Your Health The Mediterranean Way With My Family's Century-Old Recipes by Debbie Matenopoulos.

In fact, I flipped through and drooled over all the gorgeous photos when it first arrived. I knew it was going to be a challenge to pick one item to try.

Well, you all know how much I adore meatballs, so when I saw the Greek Meatball Soup, I was set. Not only did it give me a choice of meat (ground beef, pork chicken or lamb), but it was served in a lemon and egg broth, a flavor that I already love in an orzo chicken soup I make regularly.

The soup itself is slightly tart, smooth and full of flavor from the simmered meatballs.

For my own family dinner I also made Debbie's Horiatki Salata and Savory Cheese Pie, which you can find all in the cookbook. All three recipes were a huge hit. The instructions were easy to follow and they came out beautifully for dinner.

There are several small touches in the book that make it a real treasure. First there are both the Greek names for the dishes listed along with their English equivalent. The Greek Meatball Soup I made from the book is called Youvarlakia Avgolemono. It also has the pronunciation following the names of the dishes.

And besides all the photos of the delicious food, there are photos of Greece in all it's splendor and little bits of culture peppered throughout.

I am loving this cookbook and know I will be pulling it out many more times over the Summer months for entertaining and weekend meals. There are so many more recipes I have earmarked to try.

Youvarlakia Avgolemono (yoo-var-LAH-kee-ah ah-VGHO-leh-moh-noh)
Greek Meatball Soup

This seemingly simple dish is absolutely scrumptious! The Avgolemono acts as a soup in this recipe, making it a great way to warm your belly on a cold winter night. Serve it with Lahanosalata (page 94) for a perfect pairing.

SERVES 4
1 pound lean ground beef or lean ground turkey, chicken, or lamb
1/2 cup long-grain white rice, rinsed well and drained
1/2 cup coarsely grated onion
3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley
2 large eggs, separated
11/2 teaspoons sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
4 to 6 cups hot water, plus more as needed
6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 to 3 lemons)

Gently combine the meat, rice, onion, parsley, egg whites, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl with a large fork or impeccably clean hands. Mix until just combined but do not overwork, or your meatballs will be tough. Using your hands, gently form the mixture into balls about the size of a walnut.

Heat the olive oil in a large pot set over medium heat. Gently place the meatballs into the oil, arranging them in neat rows. Slowly pour 4 cups of the hot water over the meatballs to cover, using more water if necessary. Increase heat to medium- high, bring to a boil, and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 40 minutes or until the meatballs are tender and fully cooked. Add more water if less than 1 cup remains. You should end up with about 2 cups of broth in the pot when the meat is done.

Whisk the 2 egg yolks in a medium mixing bowl until smooth, then slowly whisk in the lemon juice. Temper the egg mixture by slowly pouring 1 cup of hot broth from the pot into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously until well combined. Slowly pour the egg yolk–broth mixture back into the pot with the meatballs, stirring gently to combine. Do not allow the broth to boil at this point or the eggs will scramble.

Gently shake the pot to coat the meatballs. Continue to cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Serve immediately, with plenty of crusty bread to soak up the sauce.

Even if you have never made Greek food before, this cookbook is a delicious place to start!

Getting Set for the Twinkie Cookbook - My Chocolate Dipped Cajeta Twinkie Recipe

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Twinkies. I received samples and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Twinkies were a fixture of my childhood. Actually all of Hostess was, including the monthly trip to the Day Old Hostess shop in town. I remember making my selections to fill lunch boxes for the next several weeks. It was the closest thing to a kid and a candy store feeling I remember.

Now that Hostess is back along with all our childhood favorites, The Twinkies Cookbook is also making it's comeback. So if you are a Twinkie fan or food fanatic with a great idea for a Twinkie treat, get your submission in for The New Edition of the Twinkies Cookbook. Help celebrate the triumphant return of the Twinkie by submitting your own unique recipe to http://hostesscakes.com/ by July 31st, 2014 for a chance to be included in the next #TwinkieCookbook.

My Twinkie creation is a Chocolate Dipped Cajeta Twinkie. My husband is a huge cajeta fan, though he could just eat it by the spoonful. I love caramel, so thought it would be great to combine our favorites into one ultimate snack cake treat. And the chocolate? Well, besides that dark chocolate is just awesome, it does a great job of holding my little Cajeta Twinkie Treat together. So grab a box of Hostess Twinkies and let's make some fun treats!

Chocolate Dipped Cajeta Twinkies

You Will Need:

  • Hostess Twinkies
  • Cajeta
  • Melting Chocolate wafers
  • multi-colored jimmies or mini M&Ms
Slice each Twinkie in half. Squeeze a little cajeta in the middle and replace the top.

In a double boiler or melting pot, melt your chocolate wafers. Dip the Twinkie sandwich in the chocolate or pour chocolate over one half. Sprinkle with jimmies or M&Ms and set on waxed paper or cupcake liners to cool. The chocolate will harden as it comes to room temperature.

Enjoy!

What would you create with your Twinkies?

For more details or recipe submission head to the Hostess website. You can also connect with Hostess on Twitter and Facebook for product information and upcoming promotions.

Real Moms Love to Eat - #RMLTE

Well, of course we do!

I know, coming from a woman who blogs about all the food in her life, this sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well, there is a new book coming out by fellow SocialMom and certified health counselor Beth Aldrich titled,  Real Moms Love to Eat

I am looking forward to reviewing a copy of this book when it comes out in January 2012. It fits well with my current food goals and focus here on Adventures in Food. The book is divided into 3 sections, a 10-part plan for making gradual and healthy food changes with meal plans, recipes as well as lifestyle changes. I love that all the reviews so far say it is not a "diet" book... it is a lifestyle book.

Diets are so hard to follow, but eating and having food options is something I can live with. I have never been personally successful on diets. Since I joined Mamavation last year, I have been working at changing my opinions on food, expanding my pallet and making healthy swaps. This book sounds just like what I am already striving for.

About the Author: Beth Aldrich was former host and producer of PBS's For Her Information. Though always interested in healthy living, a serious car accident in 2007 started her on a journey to formally study Holistic Health and Nutrition. She believes a happy life comes from both health and pleasure. She wants to share this information with other Moms so they can also enjoy food guilt-free while eating healthy and delicious foods. Find more information, including how to pre-order her book at www.RealMomsLovetoEat.com. ((New American Library, a Penguin Books Imprint, January, 2012)

Beth is running a “Food Affairiate” program right now for bloggers to help promote her upcoming book. This is how I will be getting a copy to review. (Yes, stay tuned!)

For the program you will need to contact Beth, schedule a virtual tour stop, review a digital copy of the book on your blog, promote on social media channels and then will be eligible for random prize drawings!

So, what are you waiting for? Eat, read and be happy everyone.
